We stayed in Almaty for 6 days with a couple of side trips. Every year I take my mum somewhere new, but this was the first time outside of Europe. Because of that, I guess, I was super strict when choosing the hotel and location.

Almaty might not be as sprawling as some capitals, but it offers a surprising range of places to stay – from elegant luxury hotels with mountain views to cozy, budget-friendly spots tucked between leafy boulevards. Each area has its own charm and personality, so where you stay can shape your entire experience of the city.

When I was planning my own trip to Almaty, I knew I wanted us to be close to the heart of things: cafés, parks, and museums within walking distance since I didn’t have a car and only a few days to explore. For me, that meant staying near the city center along Dostyk Avenue, where Almaty’s energy is at its best.

Now you know all the best hotels for every budget, so hopefully you’ll have an easy time choosing where to stay in Almaty. To help you even more, I’ve put together the overview of the best neighborhoods for first time travelers.

Here’s a breakdown of the most interesting areas to help you choose the right place to stay:

City Center / Dostyk Avenue — Classic, Walkable, and Full of Life

The heart of Almaty stretches along Dostyk Avenue, lined with elegant buildings, cozy cafés, and leafy parks. This is the best area to stay if it’s your first time in Almaty and you want to be close to everything: from Zenkov Cathedral and Panfilov Park to the bustling Green Bazaar and Republic Square. This is the area I stayed with my mum and honestly, I think it is the best choice for first-timers.

You’ll find a mix of luxury hotels and mid-range stays here, and everything is within walking distance or a short taxi ride. The streets feel lively but never too chaotic, and you’ll always find a place for good coffee or traditional Kazakh dumplings (manty).

Why stay here: It’s central, charming, and convenient — the perfect blend of old and new Almaty.
Nearby attractions: Zenkov Cathedral, Arbat Street, Central Mosque, Kok-Tobe Hill (reachable by cable car), and Republic Square.
Transport: From the airport, take a taxi (around 30–40 minutes) or use the Almaty Metro to Abay or Almaly stations. The area is very walkable once you’re here.
Cons: It’s not the quietest, and hotel prices are slightly higher than in other districts, but for me, the location was everything and the noise wasn’t too bad. We could easily go for dinner and not worry to have a long way back to the hotel.

Medeu & Shymbulak — For Mountain Lovers and Winter Adventures

If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up with views of snow-capped peaks while still being close to the city, this is your spot. The Medeu and Shymbulak area, just 25 minutes from downtown Almaty, feels like stepping into an alpine resort — fresh mountain air, evergreen forests, and plenty of hiking or skiing options.

Stay here if you’re visiting in winter for the slopes, or in summer when the area transforms into a hiker’s paradise. You can even take the cable car from Medeu up to Shymbulak for jaw-dropping views.

Why stay here: Perfect for a peaceful getaway or nature-based holiday, but still close enough for a day trip downtown.
Nearby attractions: Medeu Ice Rink, Shymbulak Ski Resort, Kok-Tobe Hill, and the mountain trails of Ile-Alatau National Park.
Transport: Easily reachable by car or taxi (around 30–40 minutes from the city). If you don’t drive, take bus 12 or a Yandex Go taxi from the center.
Cons: You’ll need transport to reach restaurants or the city – not ideal for nightlife or quick city exploring.

Alatau / Bostandyk District — Green, Peaceful, and Wellness-Oriented

Further south, the Alatau area is all about space and serenity. This district is home to spa resorts, wellness retreats, and elegant residential areas framed by the mountains. If you’re after quiet walks, mountain views, and a more relaxed pace, this is the perfect spot to unwind.

Nearby attractions: First President’s Park, Alatau Theatre, Botanical Garden, and the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains.
Transport: About 30–40 minutes from the airport. Buses run to the center, but taxis (Yandex Go or Bolt) are faster.
Cons: Limited nightlife and restaurants nearby — more of a retreat than an urban base.

Old Town / Abay Avenue — Culture, History, and Local Flavor

This area is the soul of old Almaty — with wide Soviet-style avenues, old cinemas, and plenty of charm. Abay Avenue and its surroundings are full of art galleries, local bakeries, and family-run hotels. It’s not as polished as Dostyk Avenue, but it’s authentic and full of character.

Located just west of the center, Almalinsky District is a great all-rounder — ideal if you want to live like a local but still be near all the attractions. This is where you’ll find mid-range hotels, great food spots, and an easygoing atmosphere.

You can spend the day shopping, then head to a nearby spa or rooftop bar. It’s not as scenic as other districts, but it’s convenient, affordable, and lively. It’s not the best for first-time visitors, in my opinion, but it could a good option.

Why stay here: Affordable stays, great dining, and easy access to the city’s main sites.
Nearby attractions: Almaty Central Stadium, Abay Opera House, local cafes and restaurants.
Transport: Excellent connections — metro, buses, and taxis are quick and cheap.
Cons: Not much mountain scenery or green space compared to southern districts.

Near the Green Bazaar — Local Markets and Street Life

If you love food markets and want to be surrounded by local energy, stay near Zeleny Bazaar (Green Bazaar). This area bursts with color — piles of dried fruit, honey, nuts, and spices fill the air with sweet aromas. Hotels here tend to be small and locally run, offering good value.
