Best Travel Destinations for a Week: 13 Countries Worth Every Day of Annual Leave

The best travel destinations for a week are not necessarily the closest or the most obvious ones. They are the ones that deliver something extraordinary within seven days and send you back to your desk on Monday morning already planning the next trip. A week off work is not a long time. Used well, it is enough to change how you think about a place, a culture, or sometimes yourself.

I have been to all thirteen countries on this list. Some I visited for a few days, some I returned to multiple times, and a few I lived in long enough to know them beyond the surface. Every single one of them justifies the annual leave request. Every single one delivers within a week if you plan it properly and resist the urge to cram in too much.

This is not a list of the easiest destinations or the most Instagrammed ones. It is a list of places that genuinely reward the time you give them — for people with limited days off and high standards for how they spend them.

1. Finland: Nature, Silence and the Kind of Reset You Actually Need

Finland does something to you that is difficult to explain until you have been there. The vast forests, the pristine lakes, the quality of the silence in the countryside — it is the kind of place that genuinely resets you in a way that a beach holiday rarely does. It is also one of the safest countries in the world, which matters when you are travelling alone and want to focus on the experience rather than your surroundings.

A week here works beautifully. Two to three days in Helsinki for the architecture, the design scene and the food, then north to Lapland for the midnight sun in summer or the Northern Lights in winter. The contrast between the two is extraordinary and the logistics are straightforward. But my favourite part of Finland? Food. Hands down one of the best quality you can find.

Do not miss: A reindeer safari in Lapland or ice fishing if you visit in winter. In summer, a sauna by a lake followed by a swim in said lake is not optional – it is the entire point.

Must-Visit Places

  • Helsinki, the vibrant capital city, where you can explore the beautiful architecture and vibrant cultural scene.
  • Lapland, the land of the midnight sun and the elusive Northern Lights, where you can go on a reindeer safari or try your hand at ice fishing.

2. Estonia: The One That Surprised Me Most

Estonia was on my list for a long time before I finally went, and it immediately became one of those places I wish I had visited sooner. It is small, safe, easy to navigate and completely enchanting in a way that bigger, more obvious European destinations rarely manage.

Tallinn’s medieval old town is one of the best preserved in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site — wandering its cobblestone streets feels genuinely like stepping into another century. Beyond Tallinn, the Estonian countryside and coastline are beautiful and almost entirely tourist-free.

A week here gives you Tallinn properly, a day trip or two into the countryside, and if you time it right, the Medieval Festival in July which is one of the most atmospheric events I have attended anywhere in Europe. Go before everyone else discovers it.

Must-Visit Places

  • Tallinn, the capital city with its well-preserved medieval old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Saaremaa, the largest island in Estonia, known for its unspoiled nature, historic windmills, and picturesque villages.

3. Poland: history, culture and pierogi

Why Poland?

Poland is a country that seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. I am sure you’ll love spending a week of your annual leave there. You’ll feel safe and welcome in this diverse and vibrant country. I actually never heard of any assaults or very unpleasant situations against travellers (or local girls for that matter), so I really recommend Poland. I might be biased here though since I am from Poland, but it is really a beautiful country to visit.

From the historic streets of Krakow to the stunning landscapes of the Tatra Mountains, Poland offers something for everyone. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Warsaw, visit the haunting Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, or indulge in the delicious Polish cuisine. Poland will captivate you with its charm and leave you wanting more.

Must-Visit Places

  • Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and vibrant nightlife.
  • Zakopane, a picturesque town nestled at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, offering stunning hiking trails and breathtaking views. Don’t miss a walk to Morskie Oko, a beautiful lake in the mountains.
  • Warsaw, the capital of Poland was hugely destroyed during the WWII, but now it’s a bustling, modern city with a charming old town.
  • Gdansk, I always doubt whether Gdansk or Krakow is my favourite city in Poland. I’ve been to both multiple times and I must admit, they are so beautiful that I simply cannot take my pick.

4. Thailand: the land of smiles

Thailand has been a favourite solo travel destination for decades and the reasons have not changed. The locals are genuinely warm, the food is extraordinary, the temples are among the most beautiful in the world, and the variety within a single country is remarkable — you can move from the chaos of Bangkok to the peace of a mountain temple in Chiang Mai to a beach on an island in the Gulf of Thailand within a single week and feel like you have been to three completely different places.

My favourite part of Thailand is the north. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have a completely different atmosphere from the south: slower, greener, more culturally rich. The White Temple in Chiang Rai is unlike anything else I have seen in Southeast Asia. Do not skip it in favour of the beaches. I spent just a bit over a week between Bangkok and the north and I would go back.

A week works well structured as two days in Bangkok, three days in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and two days on whichever island appeals. It is a full week but a deeply satisfying one.

Must-Visit Places

  • Bangkok, the bustling capital city, where you can explore ancient temples, indulge in delicious street food, and experience the vibrant nightlife.
  • Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai- my favourite places for experiencing the nature and amazing temples like the white temple in Chiang Rai.

5. Vietnam: a feast for the senses

Why Vietnam?

Vietnam is a country that will awaken your senses and ignite your spirit of adventure. From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the serene beauty of Halong Bay, Vietnam offers a diverse range of experiences for solo female travellers. Explore the ancient town of Hoi An, trek through the lush mountains of Sapa, or cruise along the Mekong Delta. Vietnam’s warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes will make your solo journey an unforgettable one.

Clearly, one week is not nearly enough to see Vietnam. I spent a week in Hoi An alone and could have stayed a month. It is one of the most beautiful towns in Southeast Asia, small enough to feel intimate and rich enough in history, food and atmosphere to fill every hour without any effort. If you are choosing between cities, Hoi An is the one.

A week structured around Hanoi in the north, a day trip to Halong Bay and then flying south to Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City gives you the full picture. It is a busy week but Vietnam rewards the pace.

Must-Visit Places

  • Hanoi, the capital city, where you can explore the narrow streets of the Old Quarter, sample delicious street food, and visit historic landmarks.
  • Hoi An is an absolute dream! I spent there a week and honestly, it’s one of the few
  • Ho Chi Minh City, the bustling metropolis formerly known as Saigon, where you can experience the vibrant nightlife and immerse yourself in the country’s rich history.

6. Zanzibar, Tanzania: a tropical paradise

Why Zanzibar, Tanzania?

Zanzibar is for when you want the beach done properly. Not a crowded resort with a swim-up bar, but white sand, turquoise water, warm Indian Ocean temperatures and a historic Stone Town that gives you something genuinely interesting to do beyond lying horizontal.

I went looking for rest and found something richer than I expected. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most atmospheric places in East Africa — the narrow streets, the carved wooden doors, the mix of Arab, African and colonial influences layered over each other in ways that take time to understand. A couple of days there followed by the rest of the week on the beaches of Nungwi or Kendwa is a genuinely perfect combination.

A week here is ideal. Any less and you shortchange Stone Town. Any more and you have simply found a very good place to be.

Must-Visit Places

  • Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can wander through the narrow streets, visit historic landmarks, and shop for local crafts.
  • Nungwi, a picturesque village known for its stunning beaches, vibrant marine life, and breathtaking sunsets.

7. Spain: a tapestry of culture and passion

Why Spain?

You might not know, but I lived some time in Spain and it is probably one of the countries I explored the most. Spain is a country that will capture your heart with its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and warm hospitality. As a solo female traveller, you’ll feel safe and welcome in this diverse and beautiful country. Whether you’re exploring the historic streets of Barcelona, indulging in the vibrant nightlife of Madrid, or relaxing on the sun-drenched beaches of the Costa del Sol, Spain offers a wealth of experiences that will leave you with lifelong memories.

Must-Visit Places

  • Seville, the capital of Andalusia, where you can immerse yourself in the rich Moorish history, visit stunning palaces, and experience the passionate flamenco dance.
  • Madrid is such an underestimated city in Spain, but for me is one of the best places to visit, especially if you love art and trendy restaurants.
  • Granada, my absolutely favourite city in Spain. With its remains of Arab culture and architecture, unique hospitality and mountains to hike just outside the city, Granada cannot be missed. I went twice and stayed there for a month altogether and would happily go back.
  • Barcelona, a cosmopolitan city known for its unique architecture, vibrant street life, and world-class cuisine. While Barcelona does not impress me as much as other places, I still think it’s a must thanks to the unique Gaudi architecture.

Must-Visit Places

  • Reykjavik, the vibrant capital city, where you can experience the lively music scene, visit the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church, and indulge in the local cuisine. Although it is a lovely city to visit, don’t spend too much time there if you are on a short trip as the most breathtaking places are outside the city.

11. Qatar: a modern oasis

Why Qatar?

Qatar, a small country in the Middle East, is a modern oasis that offers solo female travelers a unique blend of traditional Arabian culture and modern luxury. Doha, the capital city, is a bustling metropolis with futuristic skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and world-class shopping malls. Explore the stunning Museum of Islamic Art, take a stroll along the Corniche promenade, or indulge in a traditional Arabian meal at the Souq Waqif. Qatar’s safety, cleanliness, and warm hospitality make it an ideal destination for solo female travelers looking to experience the best of the Arabian Peninsula.

Possibly, Qatar could be number one on this list- I truly cannot think of another country that is as safe as Qatar for girls travelling solo. How can I be so sure, you may ask? Well, I’ve lived in Qatar for six years and whether I go out during the day or night, I never felt unsafe I was bothered by anyone.

Must-visit places

  • The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA): Situated on the Corniche waterfront in Doha, MIA is an architectural masterpiece showcasing Islamic art and artifacts from across centuries and various regions. The building itself is a work of art and the exhibits offer a deep insight into Islamic culture and history.
  • Souq Waqif: A vibrant traditional market in the heart of Doha, Souq Waqif is a sensory delight. It exudes an old-world charm with its maze of alleys filled with vendors selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts, and more. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Qatari culture.
  • Al-Wakrah- a little town outside of Doha with a lovely promenade.

12. Malta: a Mediterranean paradise

Why Malta?

Malta, an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea, is a paradise for solo female travelers seeking sun, history, and crystal-clear waters. Valletta, the capital city, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a wealth of history, culture, and stunning architecture. The island of Gozo, just a short ferry ride away, is a haven for nature lovers, with its picturesque countryside and beautiful beaches. 13. United Arab Emirates: a fusion of tradition and modernity

Why UAE?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a fascinating destination that offers solo female travelers a unique blend of traditional Arabian culture and modern luxury. Dubai, the most well-known city in the UAE, is a glamorous metropolis with iconic skyscrapers, luxurious hotels, and world-class shopping. Abu Dhabi, the capital city, is home to the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the beautiful Corniche waterfront. From dune bashing in the desert to exploring the traditional markets of the old town, the UAE offers a wealth of experiences for solo female travelers.
